Why Fellowship Programs Matter More than Ever

At a time when technology is reshaping nearly every aspect of the economy, fellowship programs play a critical role in preparing the next generation of Hill staff to meet that moment. Strengthening our pipeline of emerging technology advocates will transform the outlook for our innovation economy.

That is why I was so excited for the launch of the American Innovation Project’s (AIP) Policy Innovation Fellowship. It’s time to double down on our commitment to educating current and future leaders about emerging technologies.

The AIP Fellowship program combines structured online learning with real-world experience. The tactile experience of direct engagement through a Congressional placement bridges academic knowledge and practical policymaking.

I wholeheartedly believe that hands-on experience is where real learning transformation occurs. Our online classrooms  introduce core concepts, and AIP Fellows will exercise real-world judgement by learning on the job: drafting memos, supporting legislative priorities, and navigating competing stakeholder perspectives. These in-person engagements also foster a visceral understanding of what drives policy decisions, and enables  fellows to build relationships across offices, parties, and sectors. Building a lifelong network will help future leaders navigate the fast-moving digital economy.

The thesis is simple: strong institutions are built by people who have seen how the tools and systems actually work. Fellowship programs accelerate that learning, equipping emerging leaders with the experience, judgment, and relationships needed to help shape their world with confidence.

Congratulations to Hugo and Jacob, AIP’s Inaugural Fellows. I have no doubt you will both set the standard of excellence for the AIP Fellowship program.
